Respiratory Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygenation in Acute Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Park Wee-Hyun

Yun Yung-Gil
Abstract
Respiratory effects of hyperbaric oxygenation in acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning were studied in dogs. In this study dogs were divided into two groups, namely the control and the experimental groups. In the former, 100 percent oxygen was inhaled for 60 minutes following the induction of CO poisoning and in the latter, hyperbaric oxygenation was given under three and two atmospheric pressures for 30 minutes, respectively. Acute CO poisoning was induced by the rebreathing of two percent CO gas mixture for 15 minutes.
Arterial CO saturation was restored to the nearly basal level after hyperbaric oxygenation in the experimental group, whereas it became remarkably low following oxygen inhalation but was still significantly higher than that of the basal level. Arterial; oxygen saturation showed inverse relationship to that of CO saturation, as expected. Minute ventilation was significantly increased in both groups an the increase was. mainly due to the increase in t e respiratory rate in the control and to the increase in the tidal volume in ¢¥the experimental group. Oxygen consumption and arteriovenous oxygen difference were also increased significantly in both groups, but the degree of increase was slightly more marked in the control group. Carbon dioxide elimination showed insignificant increase in both groups.
